I profoundly believe in the future of the Fianna Fáil Party and of the goodwill of current and
former members.
If elected Vice President of the Party, I will enthusiastically help in connecting with and encouraging
Party members throughout Ireland in the interests of a vibrant and confident Fianna Fáil Party.
I am ready to assist Fianna Fáil candidates for the local elections in 2014 anywhere in Ireland in the
interests of making big gains for the Party in those elections.
I was first elected to Seanad Éireann in 2002 and re-elected in 2007 and in 2011.
As a Senator I have advocated new approaches to childcare provision, discrimination against our
ageing fellow citizens and suicide prevention.
At the request of the Leader of Fianna Fáil, Micheál Martin TD, I have prepared a comprehensive
Fianna Fáil policy paper on developing an Age Friendly Society in Ireland.
In 2011, the Leader appointed me to the Taoiseach’s 1916 Commemoration Committee and to the
Oireachtas Good Friday Agreement Committee.
In my ten years as a Senator, I have been a tireless campaigner for human rights and justice,
for example, on behalf of the Thalidomide Survivors and for the numerous personal cases which
distressed citizens bring to me.
I was first elected to the Fianna Fáil National Executive in 1993 and I currently represent the
Parliamentary Party on the National Executive.
I am co-founder of Lir Chocolates which today employs 220 people based in Navan, County Meath.
I am married to Padraic White, former Managing Director of IDA Ireland.
