More than 200 Fianna Fáil members and supporters gathered in Goatstown tonight to select the party’s candidate for the upcoming General Election.  Delegates chose Senator Mary White to fight for a Dáil seat in the newly redrawn constituency.

Speaking following her selection, Senator Mary White commented, “It is a great honour to be chosen to represent Fianna Fáil in the Dublin Rathdown constituency.  The fact that the Fianna Fáil membership in this community has entrusted me to build on that tradition and win a seat in Dáil Éireann is a major responsibility.  I am also extremely proud to be the first woman selected by Fianna Fáil to contest the next general election.

“It is a responsibility that I welcome and I relish, because rarely in the past has the country faced such an important election.  Citizens, betrayed by the broken promises of the Government parties and unconvinced by the false promises of those on the hard left, are looking for a new approach to politics – where we set out in very clear terms what our vision for the future of Ireland is.

“Families are struggling to make ends meet.  They hear endless Government rhetoric about economic recovery, but they still don’t see any respite from austerity and watch instead as our children and our most vulnerable bear the brunt of cuts.  I know what it’s like to face the challenges business owners are facing every day.  I co-founded Lir Chocolates with Connie Doody in Dundrum in 1986 and I am delighted to say it has gone from strength to strength through hard work and determination.

“There is a major opportunity for Fianna Fáil in this upcoming election in Dublin Rathdown.  People who were let down can see that we are the only party that has actually learned from the past and is committed to practising a different brand of politics.  I pledge tonight to run a constructive and positive campaign that is about the needs of our community and demonstrating that positive community politics can make a real difference.”

Senator Mary White also paid tribute to her competitors in tonight’s convention.  She commented, “I would also like to pay tribute to Councillor Shay Brennan and Councillor Liam Dockery.  Over the course of this campaign we got to know each other well and I know that we all wanted this nomination for good and positive reasons.  We treated the process with the respect and seriousness it deserved.  I know they will be disappointed, but I also hope we will all be able to work together to return a Fianna Fáil TD to work on behalf of the people of Dublin Rathdown.”
