Following the serious flooding of the Little Dargle River in Loreto Park on Friday, November 14 2014, I am delighted the confirm that new flood defences for the Little Dargle River are now complete.
I met with local residents and business owners the morning of the flooding and personally witnessed the serious damage caused. To ensure this devastation would not happen again, I immediately contacted the Drainage Department of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and worked closely with Senior Executive Engineer, Mr. Paul Faughnan, over the following months.
The screen in Loreto Park has now been replaced with a much larger screen, less likely to get blocked by debis. Two manhole covers have also been replaced with porous covers on Nutgrove Avenue, which will allow flood water to drain away more easily.
Nutgrove Avenue resident, Ms. Honora Fitzimons, yesterday rang me to thank for my help in getting the new culvert installed and said she can now “rest easy at night”. Mr. Robbie Campbell of Campbell Motors and Mr. Peter Phelan of Universal Gearboxes, whose livelihoods were put in jeopardy by the 2014 flooding, have also thanked me for “fighting their corner”.
My heart goes out to the thousands of people across Ireland affected by the aftermath of the recent flooding as I know what it’s like.
