Fianna Fáil election candidate for Dublin Rathdown Senator Mary White is calling for the immediate re-opening of Stepaside Garda station. Her call comes in response to new statistics from the CSO and Crimestoppers which show an 82% increase nationally in burglaries in the eight year period up to December 2014.

“It was sheer folly to close Stepaside Garda Station which served a wide area. Garda in Dundrum cannot be expected to cover such a large, growing population. There is a need to focus on urban crime as 80% of all crimes occur in Dublin according to the CSO.”

Senator White is very much aware of public concerns on the matter having hosted a public meeting on Burglaries & Crime which was addressed by Tim Dalton of Crimestoppers and award-winning crime journalist Paul Williams.

“People are very worried about the growing number of burglaries. In all cases the families involved said that they felt their private space had been violated. We need to ensure greater Garda presence in the area as a deterrent.”

The Senator then went on to endorse Fianna Fáil’s Seven Point Plan to tackle Dublin crime.

“The M50 and the Luas are making it easy for thieves to get into and out of the large housing estates from Sandyford to Stepaside and Kilmacud to Carrickmines. There is a crying need for Dublin Transport Police just like they have in London. The security staff on the Luas do not have the power to arrest people,” she said.

The Fianna Fáil Seven Point Plan to tackle Dublin crime calls for:

  • 14,000 new Gardaí
  • A dedicated Garda Public Order Unit for Dublin City Centre
  • The introduction of Dublin Community Courts
  • Dublin Transport Police
  • Longer sentences for those who assault the elderly
  • Tougher sentences for burglars
  • Restorative justice.

“The dramatic increase in crime in Dublin coupled with the Government’s policy of slashing Garda numbers has resulted in many people living in fear in their own homes, businesses under continuous threat of theft and anti-social behaviour on our streets. All of these concerns need to be addressed immediately,” urged Senator White.
