Fianna Fáil has selected Senator Mary White as its general election candidate for the new three-seat constituency of Dublin Rathdown.

She defeated Shay Brennan, a son of the late TD and minister Séamus Brennan, and Liam Dockery at a selection convention in the Goat Inn last night, attended by over 200 members.

It was a resounding win with Ms White being selected on the first count.

Ms White, a businesswoman, said she was extremely proud to be the first woman selected by Fianna Fáil for the general election.

“It is a responsibility that I welcome and I relish, because rarely in the past has the country faced such an important election”, she said following her selection.

“Citizens, betrayed by the broken promises of the Government parties and unconvinced by the false promises of those on the hard left, are looking for a new approach to politics”.

The new three-seat constituency represented one of the most controversial choices made by the Constituency Commission. It is part of the replacement for Dublin South, a five seater, which was broken up by the commission.
