On Wednesday June 10th, a protest organised by SPARK (Single Parents Acting for the Rights of our Kids) took place outside Leinster House in response to Joan Burton’s savage cuts to over 40,000 lone parent families.

The Lone Parent Family payment has been dramatically reduced over the past three years as a result of changes to age and income criteria, introduced by this Government.  The latest “reforms” will see some Dublin families losing up to €80 a week from July as the age threshold is cut from 16 to 7. For many, this payment is the difference between keeping their heads above water and falling into poverty.  The latest cut, which is due to take effect from July, will see these single parents put under increasing financial pressure and will quite literally take the bread off the table of these families.

The voices for lone parents were heard loud and clear outside Leinster House on June 10th. We have a responsibility to ensure that the needs of lone parent families are met. These cuts are disgraceful & do not belong in a Republic that promotes equality.
